IELTS Writing Task 2, Cambridge 13: ‘too many choices’

By Morteza Ghashghaei

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Conventional wisdom is that the abundance of choice should be of benefit to people. However, some argue the opposite. They believe that having many options in today’s world creates problems.  Personally, I believe while this is sometimes true, it is not always the case.

Of course the fact that today individuals are offered many choices is not without its problems. When people are presented with many choices, they become unsure of themselves as they grapple with the burden of judging the differences between good and bad ones. In other words, more choices can mean making the right decision begins to feel more crucial, which sometimes leads to a state of paralysis. Take, for example, a patient who has been offered some different treatments for a health problem they have. As the choice can have profound implications, they keep postponing selecting one. What is more, this kind of choice overload can lead to self-blame. Even if people have made a good decision, they might always think they could have made a different choice, resulting in a better outcome. Thus, being offered different options can ironically make life harder.

Nevertheless, abundant-choice situations are not always disadvantageous. Consider an abundance of choices the young generation faces when choosing a university major. Compared to the past, the young can now choose from a wide variety of disciplines that cater to their every need and preference. Being able to do so can even help them with their future jobs as they have mastered an area of expertise which they are interested in. Thus, more choice is not always problematic, but rather, it can help people choose wiser and build a better future, as a result.

In conclusion, there are sometimes so many options in today’s world at people’s disposal that the process of decision making becomes overwhelming. Also, making a choice in this situation can lead to feelings of regret. However, this is not always true and having options can sometimes lead to better decisions. Thus, in my opinion, choosing from many options can be good or bad depending on the situation.
