IELTS Writing Task 2, Cambridge 18, ‘the aim of science’

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? (Cambridge 18, Test 1)

While it is undeniable that science has played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of people’s lives, it is reductive to assert that this should be its sole or most important aim. In my opinion, science, in its multifaceted nature, serves diverse objectives which contribute to the richness of human experience.

Of course science has a role in facilitating certain aspects of humans’ lives. Scientific breakthroughs in the realm of healthcare exemplify the profound impact science has on people’s lives. Vaccines, treatments, and diagnostic tools have been developed through medical research, saving countless lives and alleviating suffering. The aim of science in this context is not merely academic, but profoundly human, which unequivocally enhances the quality and duration of life.

However, enhancing people’s well-being should not be considered the raison d’etre of science. Rather, science should maintain an ethical commitment to safeguarding the planet and its ecosystems as well. In the pursuit of improving lives, science must not disregard the vital task of the exploration of the unknown, the preservation of the environment and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our planet. Striking a balance between improving lives and protecting the Earth’s ecosystems is crucial for a harmonious future.

In conclusion, it is essential to recognize that while improving people’s lives is a significant aim of science, it is not the only aim, nor should it be the most important. Science’s role in expanding human knowledge and understanding, enhancing the quality of lives, and its ethical responsibility to protect the environment are all facets of equal importance in the broader spectrum of scientific endeavors.
