Being a celebrity, such as a famous film star or sports personality, brings problems as well as benefits.
Do you think that being a celebrity brings more benefits or more problems? (Cambridge 9)

Some people argue that because of their status, celebrities are faced with many problems. While I agree there are some drawbacks to consider, I believe public figures enjoy considerable benefits.

The disadvantages of being a celebrity are undeniable. Once someone has achieved fame, they cannot have the same private life anymore. This is because most people are fascinated to know more about them, so they are constantly followed by paparazzi. Also, to maintain their fame and popularity, celebrities have to appear in the media to answer questions about themselves. These mean that they have very little privacy. In addition, the famous usually have to work very hard because not only do they need to rehearse on a regular basis, but they should also take part in different events, such as fundraising campaigns, in order to be in the spotlight. If they do not, their popularity may decline considerably. Thus, being a celebrity may not always bring comfort and happiness.

Nevertheless, there are rewards to being famous which can compensate for these issues. Although they are likely to suffer from lack of privacy, they can easily deal with this problem because they normally know about this before they choose their careers, so they are mentally prepared. What is more, it is true that celebrities put a lot of energy into what they do, but so do many other people with different professions. So even if most of the current celebrities had chosen a different job, they might still have to work just as hard. Besides this, they usually earn high salaries. Also, being renowned helps them to have influence on people, which can be used as an opportunity to earn even more by endorsing products, for example. Clearly, there is a lot to be gained from enjoying fame.

In summary, a famous person may not have as much freedom and leisure time as the general public. The attention and financial benefits they get, however, can make the situation tolerable, and usually more than make up for the disadvantages.
